Saguaro Black Crappie off a bass bed.
« on: March 02, 2014, 02:36 PM »
Went to Saguaro today to bed fish for Ba_ _ and found this one Black Crappie sharing a bed with a small male Ba_ _.  We bed fished the two for about 10 minutes until I was able to get it to hit a small jig. I have never seen a mixed species bed before, and from what I observed they were quite fine with each other's presence. Anyone ever see this behavior before?
When in doubt, set the hook!

WOW :o that's a new one on me, have seen bass and crappie on beds real close to each other (figured it was mutual protection against the carp) but never sharing the same bed.  :o normally saguaro water warms slower then roosevelt etc. what was the water temp :dontknow:

You know, I really don't know. We were fully sight fishing so I was in side imagining mode, and that mode does not display temp. Having messed with the 2 of them for about 15 casts, they were working together, same bed, not two.  About 10 minutes later after we released it they were both on the bed again together. Only 3rd time ever on Saguaro, so I was just overly excited to even see a crappie. Let alone get him to hit my jig.

Great stuff! Caught my second crappie at Sag last fall and one many years ago that I can hardly remember. Fished for them last Thursday evening and this post gives me hope to keep on trying, thanks for sharing!
Have a Crappie Day

Thought I heard a weird sounding train horn coming from the east valley!!   Very nice!  Assuming it was that black straight out of the water as opposed to turning black in live well?  What a weird spring……  Thanks for the report

Were you fishing with RookieBoy from The Zone?  He posted a similar pic there

He was that black right out of the lake, released him immediately and he went right back to the bed. I was tooting my Train Whistle all day today. Great day on the water with a non Crappie Association member, Alen.
