December Fish Habitat Volunteers Needed
« on: November 16, 2015, 09:56 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Our December habitat days are coming up (12/4/2015-Friday and 12/5/2015-Saturday)and we need to get a head count to see if we have enough volunteers. Please email me (akjones@azgfd.gov /pm/call (623-236-7593) if you haven't already to let me know if you can attend either of the December dates.

We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Mesa Game and Fish Office (7200 E University Drive; Mesa, Arizona 85207). For the pour the cement truck will be scheduled to arrive at 11:00 am. We will be pouring the 12 concrete fish balls and potentially using the extra cement to build 20-40 polyshrubs if we can get the material in time. The polyshrubs will be made by filling 5-gallon buckets halfway with cement and placing various lengths of flexible polyethylene pipes into the cement. We are asking everyone who is able to stay for an extra half hour to an hour after we pour the cement to help build these additional structures. Any and all help is welcomed, 18 years or older. Children 14 to 17 years old need to be accompanies by an adult who will supervise them. If you have younger children (7-13) interested they can help out as well as long as they are being directly supervised at all times by a parent or guardian.

We will provide all the tools along with an ice-chest full of bottled water. We have a limited number of work gloves available and I suggest bringing your own pair in case we run out. The molds are made of fiberglass so dress accordingly, long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended. Closed-toe shoes are required. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen as there is minimal shade and most of the work is in direct sunlight.

Jeremy Richards made a short-YouTube video on how we assemble and tear down the molds. It is a great example of what is involved in making the concrete fish balls : http://youtu.be/MOECYMtCZXs

I think this would be great if we could get anyone in the club to go help out. I get a free volunteer day a quarter at work so I'm going to try and see if I can't get it off to go help out.

I wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone else was interested in helping out with this project.
I spoke with Amberle Jones, who made the original post, and they're needing more people to help with both days. It looks like me and Dave will be there on Saturday and I'm still trying to get off work to go out there on Friday.

Both days start at 9:00 AM and and will take about 2-3 hours max.

I've embedded the video of previous projects so you can see what we'll be doing.
