Camping at San Carlos
« on: March 08, 2011, 08:28 PM »
First off allow me to officially introduce myself, I am a Tucson resident (finishing up last semester at UA) and avid fisherman (both fly fishing and conventional). I have been lurking on this sit for some time and finally decided to make an account.

I have fished SC during the pre spawn/spawn for quite a few years now and have always enjoyed my trips.  I was up there this past weekend and boated 8 fish Saturday and 12 on Sunday.  Spent most of the time fishing on the northwest side of the flotilla although did have luck back towards the inlets.  Using mostly live bait, some on jigs and others on bare hooks.  Planning on picking up some BBC and JD jigs this week though.  I stayed at the casino with my father.

I am planning another outing with a buddy of mine next Wednesday and Thursday.  I'm strapped for cash right now and am very interested in camping by the lake around mohave point.  Do any of you have experience camping on the lake? I am worried about safety as I have heard horror stories from talkalai lake just across the way and don't want to run into any trouble.  Especially because I can't carry my trusty Colt Python on the reservation.  Basically looking to hear some of your experiences with overnight trips to the lake and if you would advise such actions.  Also is the camping on the south side of the lake by all the RV's a better bet?  I apologize if this is long winded, just trying to gain some insight.

Thanks in advance guys, I've learned much through this forum and look forward to being a regular contributor.

-Cory

First I'd like to welcome you to the site and let you know that we'll try not to hold the "fly fishing" thing against you. lol

I have never camped at Mohave but I know plenty of people that do with no problems. This time of the year there are lots of people camping and there is always more safety in numbers. The trouble that they were having at SC was years ago, I haven't heard of anything like that for a long time.

I have also been recently told that you can have a firearm at the lake. You should check into that.

Good luck man and please post your results.

I should have been more precise in my wording.  I have been told "not to get caught with a firearm" on the reservation by quite a few. I have spent many days in the White mtns and was told they are even worse with their intolerance.

Edit: Just spent too much time reading through the official SCR regulations and found this, "Any person of legal age and liscensure (is that even a word?) for a handgun may carry unconcealed handguns for personal protection purposes."  Looks like it is technically legal and I will be able to sleep easy at night.

Cory,  welcome to the forum, and thanks for digging into the regs for us that were uncertain.  I picked up a low cost CZ82 and dedicated it to the boat just incase it gets confiscated or whatnot out there. Like your trusty Cobra my daily carry pistol is alot more $$ to lose.  Hope to see you out there sometime. and Nice Elk!.

Carrying a lower cost sidearm is a great idea, will likely bring my XD40 now.  I should have mentioned my real passion lies with hunting big game.  Usually doesn't hit home with many fisherman I meet so I tend to keep it under wraps. I spend 50 to 70 days in the field most years scouting, hunting, and guiding.  If anyone is going to be out next wed/thurs keep an eye out for a lifted Dodge Ram, Cummins all the way  ;D, should be camped on Mohave point.  Come swing by, I may not have much food but cold PBR will be plentiful and readily distributed.

Welcome. You will soon learn that quite a few of us also spend most of our winters scouting and hunting.

Cory, forget that camping. Lets talk about that Bull.

Well three years ago I was one of the chosen ones and drew a fairly coveted early archery tag.  Scouted my tail off every weekend for nearly 3 months and learned all the bulls in my area of interest.  Ditched class Thursday before the hunt to set up camp and 8:00 am opening morning drew back on the bull you see. Had been keeping tabs on him for quite a while and did not want him to be an opening day bull, I had a three bulls that dwarfed this one, but the opportunity presented proved too much to resist.  Gross scored 351.

Nice! My late-season archery bull tag for 2010 resulted in tag soup.
