Title: Fill my Lakes
Post by: FishMan on August 28, 2019, 10:13 PM
Ok all our smart people.....this storm definitely hit Roosevelt, Bartlett, and even San Carlos.....how much made it to the lakes?
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: PhishingPhreek on August 29, 2019, 09:55 AM
Very, very little. The storm rolled through the valley and not the mountains, so all the water is draining below the lake chains.

Yesterday's storm isn't doing much, but this storm going on near the Verde Valley might help Horseshoe and Bartlett quite a bit!
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on August 29, 2019, 06:09 PM
huge increase, Verde river went from 48cfs to 65cfs going into Horseshoe, so dry out rain all absorbed by the dry ground. Monsoons very seldom make much of a difference unless you talk about inches of rain quickly

I don't think the rain from this storm will make its way to Horseshoe for a few hours. Based on how red and centralized it is, it's coming down really hard and fast. Won't be much, but it's better than what we've had.

Strange showed big storms near Alamo but the rivers are doing nothing either is the Verde or salt, Tonto creek came up some but falling back off, Agua fria peaked out at 6,000cfs but already back down to 100 or so with the rain in some areas I got 1.85" in north valley not much is running off yet :dontknow:

I just checked it out and it's weird. SRP is only reporting Tonto Creek at Rosey as being massively above normal water flow (3700% more than average). I was expecting the Verde River at Tangle to be high, but it's actually lower than the daily norm. I wonder if the storm just missed those mountain ranges or if the water flow hasn't made it that far yet. It's really strange!

Seeing all the FB posts of the massive waterfalls into Canyon and Sag...and the trajectory of the storm I can’t imagine it missing Roosevelt and NE of it. Fill my Lakes.

3700% not a surprise normally this time of year it is 0%

SRP had to release from granite reef due to large runoff in the lower salt lakes caused by the big fire up there this summer (g and f is worried about all the slurry and ash going into those lakes :dontknow: :()

I saw the Salt River was flowing a little through Phoenix at lunch today, so you know the salt chain of lakes got some good runoff.

Well... I still don't know how to figure out how much water is coming into San Carlos, but it looks like Bartlett has gone up 1.5 feet since yesterday while Horseshoe has still dropped almost a foot. That tells me they're releasing from both lakes.

SRP switched releases, I think to lower Canyon and Saguaro lake for the anticipated runoff from this storm so they are releasing from saguaro now more than Bartlett and bigger releases from horseshoe so Bartlett for now is coming up some but I am sure will be cold and muddy :crybaby2:.  Strange the flows in the Verde above horseshoe not that much or the agua fria going into pleasant and they have had 3+" of rain up in the foothils :dontknow:

The San Carlos page is a mess designed in 1993 but I'm sure there's a way to view input water somewhere.  I tend to just glance at it a few days after a storm to see if it went up.

I didn't check out the Agua Fria, but I did check out Tangle on the Verde River was shocked to see the flow so low considering how much rain we got. It's strange. Hopefully we get another nice storm or two roll through in the next 24 hours.

Yeah, I've looked at that page before, but it's so bad that I don't like to even reference it. I tried looking at the feeder rivers water flow and that was hard to understand.
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on November 21, 2019, 04:00 PM
Tonto creek is only 454cfs after all the rain in payson, salt river running a little more but still not much from verde side or agua fria? guess we were real dry and the rain must of come down more as a drizzle than like 2" in an hour.

Matt that USGS site is the only place I have found for flows into Carlos both going in and out of the lake plus a vague lake level. It shows both the Gila river and the San Carlos river (which at times can rock and roll from run off).
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on November 22, 2019, 05:46 AM
looking at river flows absolutely nothing going into Alamo :crybaby2: Bartlett has come up 2' since the storm started but might be due to reduced releases from the lake and bigger releases from horseshoe :dontknow:
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: PhishingPhreek on November 22, 2019, 09:43 AM
It's really confusing how little the lakes have moved with how much precipitation we've received. I don't know if it's soaking into the ground and not moving or what.
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on November 29, 2019, 10:02 AM
Whole bunch of water heading toward Alamo lake combined rivers/creek right at 20,000cfs, has a long way to go to get to the lake but with the ground somewhat saturated from the last storm some of it may get there? if that much water hits the lake it will come up feet an hour.

Lots of water in the verde going into horseshoe lake and the tonto creek is rocking and rolling going into Roosevelt.

Roosevelt up to 70%: https://streamflow.watershedconnection.com/Dwr

Bartlett 67% with Horseshoe 38%.  Bartlett changes so much never really sure what's good or bad for that lake this time of year.

San Carlos went up: https://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv?cb_all_=on&cb_00054=on&cb_00065=on&cb_00065=on&format=gif_default&site_no=09469000&period=&begin_date=2017-12-28&end_date=2019-12-28

I went to the Alamo lake level website and my browser gave a security warning so avoided going in.

Alamo came up another 2' in the last day or so it is only 4+ feet from full pool which will be interesting what the CORP does? flows just came up some up stream of Alamo so I think some snow is melting up in the foothills?

Ya, Alamo water shed nothing going on, very little down the Verde other than what it has been and the Agua Fria nothing much but man both Tonto creek and Salt river are rocking and rolling although starting to drop down some now and they are releasing water from granite reef down the river bed because of local rain on the water shed on the lower salt river lakes.

Big cell approaching Alamo right now from the west.  Could easily take it up to conservation pool but since contractor still hasn't done chit we can bet on them dumping it all down the drain again.  Sure would be nice of them to leave the water until the contractor has actually mobilized and is ready to work.

10,000cfs heading down the the 3 feeder rivers going into Alamo (correction 25,000cfs is now coming down Burro creek) and I am thinking the river bottom is still saturated could be interesting, Agua Fria running at 17,200cfs and big flow in the Verde, Tonto and Salt going to be muddy mess for a while I am sure they will dump horseshoe lake now any day.

Alamo up 4' today getting near trigger point where the CORE is required to release water for flood control, SRP dumping horseshoe lake into Bartlett so it will fill within a few days with cold muddy water, no releases from Bartlett, Rosy getting lots of water from both ends. I just had a huge thunderstorm come through 1.03" of rain and hail in about 20 mins I am just at 3" for this storm since it started and another colder storm next week.
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on March 14, 2020, 08:54 AM
Alamo up over 8' since yesterday and still rising :o, thought is they may start releasing water Monday (under the flood control guide lines) and it is several feet over full pool right now
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Bob on March 14, 2020, 09:43 AM
Remember that the Corp cares nothing about the fishing or recreational use of the lake.  They will likely do the worst thing possible for users and wait until the spawn to suddenly drop it.

Alamo is 6' over full pool right now, so they're over 100%! Every time I hear of Alamo being over 100% I think about the time when it was so full, you could fish the ramadas.  :headbang:
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on March 19, 2020, 08:04 PM
Matt word is they don't want to increase flows out of Alamo if they don't have to because of the muddy water into Havasu, heck the lake came up another foot+ today even with the releases. Buddy came home early by two days from bass fishing as it was terrible and the lake is now complete mud and will probably stay that way for a month as they pull water from the lake.

Bartlett if they keep the releases up from horseshoe should fill to 100% probably by tomorrow or the next day.

Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on March 20, 2020, 04:01 PM
It was Alamo, he came home early as the entire lake went mud when they started releasing water then it got another shot of water the last two days, plus cholla ramp is closed for the foreseeable future.

Bartlett and horseshoe are basically full they have started releasing water from Bartlett to flow down the salt river through the valley, probably bring the muddy water all the way down lake now :crybaby2:
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: PhishingPhreek on March 30, 2020, 12:20 PM
Just checked out the water levels on the "Big 8" desert lakes, and all of them are over 95% full.

The lowest is Lake Pleasant at 95.5%
Alamo is the one most full, sitting approximately at 110% full.

Obviously Roosevelt holds the most water, but it's at 97% full.

Horseshoe is at 99% and Bartlett is at 100%. Not sure what to expect with water release there because water is still coming into Horseshoe twice as fast as it usually does this time of year.
Title: Re: Fill my Lakes
Post by: Fishless on March 30, 2020, 04:13 PM
Actually Alamo at 99% is just the full pool level for releases that lake can hold a whole bunch more water to be a true 100%

Looks like Bartlett and Horseshoe have gone down in elevation in the last week with no change over the last 24 hours.

Bartlett Dam has only recorded .13 inches of rain since midnight, but 1) I'm sure that will change and 2) Bartlett fills from the mountain runoff and horseshoe, so the rain it get at the lake doesn't matter.

With that said, Tangle Creek, which is the reader on the Verde that feed Horseshoe says they're only getting 250 cfps on average for the day. That's pretty weak with how much rain we've been getting here. They have recorded 1/4 inch of rain since midnight, but that's still weak.

It looks like they're releasing water as fast as it's coming in at both lakes. But, we still have tons of rain projected through the night and into tomorrow... Plus snow forecasted as low as New River!

With flooding in show low and multi day storms I’m curious how this will impact lake levels….. San Carlos filling up lol.

San Carlos gauge for the lake appears to be down :dontknow: there was a lot of water in San Carlos river coming into the lake last week or two but I worry it may be runoff from the Mescal fire which would mean lots of black wood, ash you name it some water flowing down the Gila river. Roosevelt getting some water Tonto creek was flowing pretty good for a couple days. Quite a bit of water coming down the Verde into horseshoe so if SRP dumps that lake like normal Bartlett should get some water. Sister says they have had 6+" or rain this month in the Heber area.

Alamo lake NADA :crybaby2: hardly any rain west of the valley.

I thought pleasant was going to have a good amount of water going to it because Crown King got 1.2" of rain. That's a lot of flow down the creeks.

I saw videos of flooding in Globe, I'm not sure that water makes it to the lakes. That goes down the Gila until it reaches the Salt in Tempe, right?

Most of the creeks and washes up near Globe flow into the Salt end of Rosy but a few depending on how far south will flow into the Gila river some above and some below San Carlos. Still not much runoff anywhere in rivers and washes state wide :dontknow:

Where is all this water going. Very little seems to be hitting any of our bodies of water.  Roosevelt is only up 1 inch over the past 2 weeks. Makes no sense.

There certainly could have been a hail storm that dropped some ice, but hard to believe it would be cold enough in any circumstance for straight up snow visible...

I wonder how Lake Mary looks.

I'm not entirely sure where the water from Doney park flows to.

Alamo lake is now 2' higher than when the monsoon started, seems like it should of got a lot more water with all the storms that hit the Bagdad area and along that mountain range :dontknow:

One lake that is getting a lot of water is San Carlos regrettably Duncan and other towns along the Gila river are flooding due to storm run off, of course the irrigation company will pull the lake right back down probably by fall :dontknow:

Yep, be careful of the debris floating around.  We fished Friday and Saturday and managed one nice crappie.  Got on some bluegills and catfish Friday...
