Post by: FishMan on March 03, 2014, 06:40 AM
Doing a 2 day camp and fish trip to Bartlett this coming Friday and Saturday, and without Wadefisheman to put us on the Slabs, everyone is counting one me.  Any advice?  If your out there, I'll be in a 16 tracker with a 9.9 Mercury. I'll be sure to post a full report on Sunday.

Slight chance I'll head up there with my parents and kids.  Their spring break starts this Friday....  If I do, I'll post here my info.  I'd be camping SB Cove area.

We should be in the SB to Flats area sometime around 7:30am on Friday. Trailer behind a big diesel Ram 4x4, my Tracker will be behind a dark green Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'll take any info anyone can share. The last time I fished Bartlett was 2 1/2 months ago when we were killing them around the island.

Sounds like fun.  Need to convince myself and family we should go.  Can you purchase and tow a camper up there for me?  Tired of tent sleeping!  This would be the weekend to go as my next 2 trips are at places I don't catch fish.

I headed up yesterday. Multiple wash outs on Bartlett Lake road with debris on the way in as far as Horseshoe Lake road. Then again on the way into the Yellow Cliffs launch. A grader was out on my way in which cleared Bartlett Lake road, but it was still pretty bad on the Yellow Cliffs access when I left at 6. Lake was down probably another two feet from when I was there a couple of weeks ago. Debris on the water everywhere, including some pretty big logs, so be aware of that. Most of the big stuff was between Alder Cove and Yellow Cliffs. Uplake is like chocolate soup. San Carlos style visibility. Water was clearer as soon as you get past the bend at SB cove. I only made it that way into Alder Cove, so not to sure how it was further down. Water surface temps were 61 to 64 through out the day. Started up in the river channel near the island and worked my way back down through cat bay all the way to alder cove. Tried various things, trolling minnows vertical/ long lining jigs/ casting jigs shallow/minnows on bobbers. Ended up with one nice male crappie finally about 430 vertically trolling minnows in about 13 FOW. Bite was very light, as I missed a couple trolling with jigs, and my line started swimming away from the boat when I got this one. I only had him in the live well for an hour, as I hoped to find more, but when I let him go he was pitch black. The shad were getting busted all over in the river channel, from 20 feet up to the shorelines.

OK FishMan and DesertRat, I am taking the kids and parents to Bartlett this weekend headed up Friday afternoon and staying two nights.  I be in a white suburban camping wherever I can get to in SB Cove without getting stuck.  Wonder if the rain has all soaked in enough.  Please stop by if you see me - I will have plenty of firewood for 2 nights.  A game of mafia surely will be played.

I'll be on the lake probably not until Saturday in an Alumacraft Tournament Sport with Mercury 125.

I'll have my radio set to channel 7-1 (channel 7, subchannel 1) so give a shout out.

Dave, we've met a few times.  Usually I'm riding back chair of Brian's Lund. I'm the guy blowing the train whistle after each fish. Hope to have the pattern all figured out for you by the time u get on the water. My cell should it work 623-687-4487 out there, my rig is without a radio.

I think you are referring to OneBlade, who is Matt. I remember you when you were in the backseat of Brian's boat a couple of months ago. I have the blue and white Alumacraft. Cell service is not so good at SB Cove. Random texting, but I usually get service up lake past the no wake buoys

FishMan, my cell doesn't work there except occasionally on the lake.  I have your info though and will keep an eye out for you.

Menrats, good luck.  You really are team half-full!  If you reconsider knowing you'll be Roosied twice more in the next 4 weeks, then switch your plans to Bartlett.  Would enjoy seeing you guys there.

DesertRat - did you get the hall pass yet? :-)

I'm so glad I got everyone pumped up about camping this weekend. However, due to our friend with the RV backing out, I need to call an audible.  Likely hitting Saguaro Friday, potentially Bartlett on Saturday.

New member to the forum and new to valley lake fishing, never had a boat.  Been mostly in mountain lakes.

Done plenty of crappie fishing back in Wisconsin though.  I don't know where SB cove is but from what I can gather it is on the far north end of the lake by the inlet.

I will be camped out there for the weekend.  Will launch and beach small boat there as well.  Only electric Motor, AZ 3624 AS.

I will post successes or failures on Sunday/Monday.

If you see me out there don't hesitate to say hello.  Especially if you like jager...good luck to you all.

JJ

CaptainMorgan3, hope to see you out there.  I have white suburban and alumacraft boat with 125hp mercury.   Look for AZCrappie or Nebraska stickers on my boat and you found me.   They call me One Blade.   Good luck - we'll probably get there too late on Friday to fish but will all day Saturday.

This is where SB Cove is at and I'll be camping around here with my family:

This thread has gone everywhere. Ok, so due to some not so great events to an awesome friend, we lost our sleeping arrangement for this trip. Instead, I spent the day on Saguaro bed fishing for that other species of fish. Awesome day, 20+.......but the real news to report! is back behind the marina! we found about a dozen or so black crappie stacked up around some horizontal structure. Tried as I might to get one to strike, no luck. All in about 12 foot of water, could not see any nesting, but made me excited to see.

as in "male crappie that were black"? or crappie staging, ya 12' of water is a little deep for spawning especially with the water still cool?

thanks for the report

Let me see if I can enhance on what I said and answer everyone's question. The fish I saw were all suspended, we were in 12 feet of water, and they were holding about 6 feet down on a horizontal structure (brace holding dock structure apart).  There were beds under them, but they were bass beds, with bass in them. I ran and jigged a Curley tail through and over them about 20 times, and didn't get one to even flinch. There was probably 10-12 of them and they were very dark, just like the one I shared from last week in the Saguaro report, and yes I released him. They were actualy eating or picking things off of the grass/alge growing on the structure. Very cool to watch the behavior.

Caught nothing yesterday afternoon.  Went to night Fishing under lights.  Caught 20 or more fish. 6 Crappie.  Some bass as well.  I am fishing next to a cove outside of the no wake zone.  It is pretty tough during the day with the speedboats.  Night fishing was very good fish for about six hours..  Outboard motor took a shit on me switched to electronic only.  Will probably spend the rest of the day charging up batteries for the night fish.

P.s.
It's a good thing I'm posting on here or else this wouldn't even be a fishing report on Bartlett lake at all.  If anyone wants to join me my boat registration number is above in previous posts come by tonight I'll be happy to show you what I'm doing where I'm going and what I'm using.  peace out from BARTLETT lake.  Haha

So my parents and kids camped SB Cove Fri and camped two nights.  Water way low.  Fished Saturday primarily trolling jigs in shallow areas by buoy line, Alder cove, and several other coves.  Cast to shore a lot and after morning of nada crappie we shifted to fishing fish X with some plastics and had fun doing that -- although my dad still caught more with BBC tipped with minnow.  Wind was annoying for most of the afternoon on Saturday but wasn't a big deal by the buoy line but worse camping at the cove.  Tent didn't survive and about packed up Sat night to leave.  Couldn't turn down the kids' desire to play mafia and sleep the night there so we sucked it up roped the tent down a little and made it work.  Down that we didn't get any crappie.  That's 2 trips in a row for me.

Capt morgan - missed you this trip. maybe next one.
