I'm a snow bird from Wis/ Minn and have been watching your forum for about a year. Haven't been able to attend any meetings yet as they never seem to match my schedule/location. Love crappie fishing and have been to Alamo several times (not this year yet due to no good reports on that lake) and Bartlett. Don't yet know my way around Bartlett.
I really appreciate the fishing news you guys provide especially because of the many miles between lakes around here. Where I come from lakes are more plentyfull but truth be told the crappies are a lot smaller.

I am originally from L.A. Lower Alabama. I have been here since Jan. 89 and I have fished for everything in Most of our lakes. I like night fishing Crappie more than day time trolling. Of course I have NO Idea what I would be doing trolling for them. I have a FEW Health issues that stop me from working but I enjoy every day I have and every fishing trip is special.

Not real new lurked for awhile but here goes .I am a snowbird I guess I am here in AZ ( Sun City formerly Mesa) sometimes  from Late October lately from January to April . In Minnesota I fish extensively on Lake Mille Lacs and Lake Of the Woods. Here in Az I have a 18.5 ft Tracker Xt 60 4 stk merc set up for crappie fishing . My fishing buddies are other Minnesota snow birds who also fish extensively in the Midwest .When Dad was alive we fished with Art Chamberlain several times. You can see the problem with this as there is very little knowledge as to how and where and when to fish in AZ. So I and possibly  my buddies  would be interested in joining with others who have a common interest in fishing here in Az . With that said the events you list as club events and needing to attend two present a problem, 1.I do not currently have my pickup camper here in AZ so I would pretty much have to make it a day event , 2.In April when you have your Spring event I will have a house full of guests 4 grand kids and there parents so I may not be able to attend ( maybe I can get one parent and 4 kids in the boat(they all love to fish ). I am interested but the time frame you  guys have wil make it difficult any suggestions?.

Hello to everyone!

I grew up in northwest Florida, AKA LA, Lower Alabama, and joined the military shortly after high school. I was first assigned to Davis Monthan AFB in 97 and relocated to Arkansas in 2001. For a guy growing up outdoors, Arkansas was paradise! Unfortunately I couldn't stay and in 2007 I relocated back out here. I love to fish but feel clueless on how to be a succesful fisherman out here. Thats why I joined the site. I'm looking forward to gaining knowledge from some guys that have experience out here.

Originally from Iowa, moved here in 95.  Fished a lot when I was a kid, started again locally about 3 years ago after buying a boat from my father-in-law.  Over the past 10-12 years fished with the father-in-law at/near their cabin on Stark Lake in central Minnesota about 20 miles NW of Aitkin.  (Lake Mille Lacs is huge btw).  Love catching Pike, Crappie, and Catfish.  Just don't have enough time to fish or hunt as much as I'd like too  :crybaby2:.

Took the father-in-law to San Carlos 2 years ago.  He's fished primarily Northerns for 50 years and nearly yanked the first crappie that bit half way to Tucson (slight learning curve for him).  But seeing him catch a 17" crappie was priceless.

My name is Shea Meyer, 26 yo AZ native. I met Piscolli back at BPS a couple years ago where I learned about the association. I have recently joined and started reading the forums as fishing season for me is in full swing starting in March. Waterfowl and big game occupy months August - January.  :violent-smiley-007:

I have been fishing since I was big enough to cast rod. I have spend most of my time on the valley lakes and rivers. My primary fishing water is Roosevelt Lake. I fish crappie 75% of the time, with the remainder going to walleye and largemouth by accident.

I'm in a camoflage-wrapped aluminum bass tracker with a minn kota bow mount. My 2 favorite fishing partners are my girlfriend and my black lab. I'm never afraid to tell you what's working for me. I'm constantly trying new rigs, colors and tactics. Have to love these AZ crappies. I have caught several fish in the 2.5 lb range but I'm still waiting on that 3 pounder for the wall.

Looking forward to attending the next meeting. From what I read, you all seem to be a great people. See you out there!

Like everyone else, I enjoy fishing.  Not really particular what species as long as its sporting and I have a great time.  I'm a native Arizonan and have been fishing all my life.  I remember going to San Carlos and Roosevelt back in the 60's.  I currently live in Mesa and still like fishing San Carlos and Roosevelt for bass and crappie. I also like the high country for trout and on the west coast for offshore tuna, wahoo, yellowtail and marlin.  I have a small personal watercraft that has had it's share of fish in it.  I like to practice catch and release a lot.  I can only eat a plate full of fish at one timeand don't want to be greedy.  I haven't been crappie fishing in a while and started searching the internet and found this website. Nice surprise to find a Forum with members willing to share some information.  I'm looking forward to hopefully catching some crappie this spring  Your club meeting sound interesting and a chance to socialize some.  Thanks guys. Tight Lines to all.  <://///><

I think you took all the crappie out of Alamo.  Not hearing much for reports out there.

All I can remember is that he was an older gentleman and he drove a either dark blue or black 4dr new Chevy.

I wish I could say I caught all crappie from Alamo. I would be crappie king in my book. We found last year late march early April is best time to go. Last year we were catching crappie in January just a few but this year not 1 yet.

Welcome to the board! I was like you when I started fishing for crappie about 7 years ago (Pre AZCA) and went to Bartlett a hand full of times and never had a bite. I started to talk to a few of the crappie guys on The Zone and FINALLY got into a crappie bite and loved it. I pretty much quit bass fishing and stuck to nothing but crappie. Boat has been trouble for the last year and I haven't been able to go fishing in over a year. Last time I went crappie fishing was almost a year and a half ago!

:sign0144:Arrived in Arizona back in July of 86' coming from Pismo Beach, Ca. wow was it hot here. I have adjusted and will be buried here cause I love this place. I'm 66 and semi retired, my wife is the big bread winner and about 9 years younger...that's how I planned it so I could get in some fishing time before she wants to stop working and she keeps bringing up how close it's getting!!!YIKES I never fished until my arrival here and my neighbor got me "hooked" so I joined a few clubs and fished a lot of tourneys and woke up one day and said " Doog, you can't fish good enough to make money, stop it" so I'm happy now with my 14' aluminum and 25hp. I still load up 6-7 rods and get out on the water then tell my self "dummy' habits are hard to break. That's why I want to fish for crappie and need to learn a bunch. I like the whole idea of slow trolling and a couple of rigs and a lot less stuff.
If anyone out there is off on Mondays,Tuesdays,Wednesdays and wants another boater please let me know.. Doog :notworthy:

Post by: Yukonleft on March 25, 2013, 02:18 PM
Hey fellers-

Name's Joel.  Born and raised in Tucson.  Just moved up to Chandler with the family in October '12.  I have been a Crappie hunter since I was about 3 or 4.

My Grandparents, mother, and two aunts moved out here from Tennessee in '62.  My Grandpa is a retired miner, and got two weeks off every year he was working here.  He spent the first week by himself at Roosevelt, then the grand kids would come up and camp for a week over spring break.  These are some of the best memories of my childhood.

This was back in the very early 80s through about 92...every year.  We camped on the shore near Grapevine, with the boat pulled snug up against a rubber mat with two pieces of tire to keep the bow from scraping too much.  The road in was dirt and steep.  The "Spring Creek Store run" was the highlight of the week as it usually only happened once or maybe twice during our stay.  We got the exact same space every time we came for about 7 years in a row.  We saw the same people each year, and I played with the same kids.

The Crappie fishing varied from "pretty dang good" to down right tiring.  My Grandpa ran two shifts per day.  One AM and one PM after lunch.  We never had anything bigger than a 16' Bass Tracker (which seemed gigantic to me), and we had 10-12 people there at any given time, so a schedule was necessary.  With sometimes 6 of us in the boat...and water approaching the gunnels, we had many 50 fish days, and a couple of 200 fish weeks.  We fished minnows under bobbers almost exclusively.  A Zebco 404 and later a Zebco 1020...small, red and white plastic bobber...smallest minnow you could get out of the wire-reinforced styrofoam minnow bucket.  When the fish were in the brush, my Grandpa would occasionally get out the "fly pole" (crappie pole) and let us dip minnows in the little holes in the brush.  We'd come back with a basket full of Crappie...greeted with a fried bologna sandwich and a cold RC or grape soda (Shasta).  There were a few times when we kids would opt not to fish because we were tired of catching so many.  We would get that knowing smile from our Grandpa as he said, "Well,....okay..."  ...his way of saying, "You're an idiot..."

Leaving at dark and cold....motoring up to Windy Hill or "Sally Mae" with two homemade biscuits and sausage stuffed in my sweatshirt pockets...the hood of which is cinched at my chin to protect my ears from the morning wind...that feeling when the motor slows and quites, and finally shuts off...the two big waves of your own boat's wake catch up to you and push you just a bit closer to your cove...and the smell of the two-stroke exhaust...that is still the stuff of magic and butterflies in my stomach.

I'm grown now...almost 36 years old with two kids of my own.  I don't get to fish as often as I'd like, but the magic remains.  I still see it in the faces of my son and daughter as they wrestle in a trout or small catfish.  I see it in the honest excitement in their eyes when I tell them that we're going fishing.  I realize now why my Grandpa put up with all the trouble of taking a bunch of kids and their moms...and sometimes dads... out in a little boat...having to rig everyone...cast some of our lines...untangle all of our lines...get the fish off...rebait some of us...watch the depth finder...mind the wind...mind the rocks...mind the rods...mind the hooks...take us to shore because we forgot to pee...

It's worth it...even just to catch a little glimpse of that magic.

That...and he had already been fishing and camping for a week by himself  :D

I don't know that I have a favorite lake.  Rosey has most of my memories...and Silverbell.  I like Apache as well, and the San Carlos Lake of days long passed.

I fish from a canoe these days.  I have an ugly boat, but I'm selling her as I have no room to store her, and no vehicle with which to pull her.

Glad to be here.

Hello. Originally moved to Arizona in 1989 with the Air Force and never left. Came from Ohio where I used to Bass and Catfish mostly. Been fishing in AZ since the early 90's, mostly Roosevelt but have fished Alamo, Apache, Canyone, Saguaro, Sa Carlos, Pleasant, Patagonia, Pena Blanca, Parker Canyon, Arivaca, Bartlett... hmmm guess I fished a couple places. I enjoy getting out on the water when I can, typically I only fish Dec-May then start playing more with the family in the water with the fish. I used to Bass fish more, the last couple of years I've spent quite  bit more time crappie fishing. I used to go out at night put the lights out and catch my crappie that way (still fun). Now I do a considerable amount of time trolling and really enjoy the quality of fish you catch this way. To date my biggest Crappie is 2 1/2 lbs, hoping to crack that 3 some day. Hopefully one of these days I'll make it to the crappie fest and meet everyone, until then if you see me on the water I'm in a black skeeter 200ZX with a 150 mercury. There's usually a big goofy guy on the front of the boat with hat on drinking a cold beverage, say hello to James. See you on the water.

Hey! all just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Preston, I'm 29 and a 2nd gen AZ native. I grew up fishing at pleasant even before the dam was raised, but now find myself at Bartlett most outings. I have been Azcrappie.com reader for a few years and always wanted to be more involved. My old fishin buds have either moved or became to busy to go with any more so I'm looking to make some new friends who love slayin slabs as much as I do!

Hi gang,
My name is Enrique Ramirez and I am 30, almost 31.  People call me Kique, Henry an a host of other names.  Take your pick. I grew up in Mammoth fishing a little local pond and also fishing the salt, stocktanks on SC, Seneca and of course Roosevelt, San Carlos and Talkalai.
Crappie fishing is fun regardless if you catch one or not, but even better when you are catching em.  I enjoy catching cats on the river more than anything, but crappie is a close second as I am still trying to figure em out and get there when the bite is going mad.  San Carlos was great for that. My funnest trip was in high school going fishing with my neighbor to Canyon lake.  We caught an outrageous amount of sunfish/bluegill keeping close to 100 that were hand or bigger.  I will never forget that.
Anyways I love fishing, being outdoors and loving what God has created for us.
I'm not new at fishing but still working to get crappie fishing down like i have the cats in the river.
Here to learn but also to share what I can.

Kique

Just wanted to say , although we made it to just the meeting at Crappie fest , Glenda and I enjoyed your company and warm welcome . Saturday we returned back to Minnesota for the summer and it promptly snowed 6 inches , As I speak it is snowing and we are expecting another 8 inches by tomorrow evening , I have May 12th 5pm as an Ice out date in the Lake Association Pool and feel that maybe was a bit early . Needless to say if Brian or Chris or Willy ever says to me stick around and go to Lake Powell with us , I am all in ,someone else can freeze and put the d-- docks in . Again thanks for the warm welcome and I hope to make the second meeting requisite in October . Stay Warm  !!  oops I guess that is not appropriate , Tight lines ! That is better.

Hello, My name is Darren Turner.  I've been in AZ for almost 15 years and I have been hooked on crappie since the first trip I went on with my dad back in Illinois.  My two favorite lakes are Bartlett and Roosevelt.  We usually do decent at Bartlett under the lights.  Rosey, We landed 4 three pounders on an Easter sunday afternoon, but deployments and Korea have kept me from getting back out there.  Hey, I don't have a boat, but does anyone know a place we can catch some crappie from shore around Rosey.  We usually go to Rattlesnake cove at Bartlett.  Thanks for the input.

Dang that sucks. Like piscolli said their are some nice crappies in their. I caught my biggest one in their at 2lb 10oz. Fishless when did you hear about that? I fished it in late April and they charged me 10$. Caught some nice slabs too. Lot were late spawners so we let a lot go.

I also saw some people fishing from shore to the left of marina if looking at marina from shore. Looks like an old ramp just below sheriff station. That whole cove was holding lots of fish when we went threw thier. But I believe it's off limits to boats so we did not fish their. But the people over on shore thier told us they had caught a few slabs in that area. Good luck out their Darren!!! and I Thank You.

I think it happened in May? g and f wildlife managers were discussing things with the marina, I have not check back to see if they worked things out or if it is (shut down for charging people) etc. like I said best to call the marina at rosy and ask them. You can fish the cove where the marina is you just can not go by boat into the slips where the boats are moored or around their dock area, you can fish off shore near the marina launch or down near the small roadway that goes out to the marina off shore, as far as near the sherrifs substation not sure if that is posted but I would not walk down from the office there? have fished a bunch in that marina cove in the past along the shore line by boat.

Darren, you  can fish the marina docks at Rosey for like $5. There are crappie all over them. Welcome to the site and thank you for serving our country.
Bill, Thanks for the sentiment.  I will head up to Rosy and give it a try.  My two son's will love you for it.  Thanks again.

Darren

Darren,

I am out at Luke myself but am currently in Afghanistan.  We'll have to get together when I get back...

We'll definitely do that.  I'm stationed at DM, but my home is in Surprise.  Look forward to removing a few AZ natural resources (CRAPPIE) with you.

Howdy fishermen!
I'm Chuck Phelan from Tucson and I love to fish too. I Grew up trolling Apache and Roosevelt with waterdog bombers, (when did it become rosey?) And always got excited when we caught crappies as I love to eat them. I love fishing the Black river for small mouths and the Salt above the Young bridge for flat heads and channels. I am getting too old(58) to hike back to my secret holes on the rivers. Besides that my wife and kids won't let me anyway. So I bought a pontoon boat so I can go back to fishing Roosevelt for "Crappy!" in my old age.I heard mention of San Carlos in an earlier post................(1970's)I can remember loading a boat with 6 people on it and everyone of us had Bayou boogies tied on. In one afternoon we filled an ice chest with bass in less than an hour casting and reeling as fast as we could. It was unbelievable!

I have been in AZ about 17 years, my wife and 4 sons are all native Arizonans. My four boys are all between the ages of 12 and 14 years old. I am interested in passing the fishing bug onto them at an earlier age than I got it. I am at the beginning of the learning curve on Crappie fishing, so we will learn as a family.

I have a 1986 Chris Craft deckboat (my first boat), also on the beginners learning curve when it comes to my boat. I met the new President at work and he turned me onto the AZ Crappie group, we are excited to get started.

On a personal note, I am a 6'8" bald guy that is a bailiff in the Superior Court for Pinal County (see Bull from Nightcourt). I was a baseball player in a former life Cubs, Expos, and Mets over a 5 year minor league career. I know how hard it is to start catching fish and be able to find any real info on where to go and what to use, so I will be sharing all of my info with the others as I have some more success.

Hey Treetop, good to meet you.  Nice old reference to Night Court!   You'll find the AZCA members are willing to share their techniques and you'll really find a good mix in the group - some long line trollers, other slow vertical trolling, others casting to shore and structure.  All have different setups and uses.  See you at the crappie fest.

My home lake is Kerr Lake / Buggs Island which is 45 miles north of Raleigh. Kerr Lake is one of the east coasts largest lakes with about 850 miles of shoreline. It offers excellent crappie, bass, catfish and striper fishing. The area is rural to some degree but close to Raleigh or Richmond. You are also a couple of hours from the outer banks. After Kerr I would suggest Badin or High Rock Lakes a little futher west close to Charlotte and Greensboro region of the state.

I am Native from Flagstaff, AZ. A good friend sold me on the idea of catchin' this elusive fish and told me it is the best you will ever eat. So, we started last summer we bought our fishing tags and headed for Bartlett. We night fished, we were able to produce large bait balls, attract what looked to be large fish on the fish finder, 8 months go by, I start wearin' thin, and I thought to myself, "he is telling me 'tall-tales'". I will say this this much though, the crappie must know who are members of AZCA because no sooner than I was inducted, I caught one of them. To my surprise, they are tasty, and now I am hooked!

My name's Gene. I'm originally from MD/PA and have lived here in the valley since 2007. I'm mostly a fly fisherman but I'll gladly use spinning or bait fishing gear if I need to get down below about 15' or so - not practical with a fly line even if it is sinking line. Me and my wife love fishing of all kinds and have a bass boat due in soon. I'm working on the storage house (boat-port) in the yard now to keep the sun off of it. The only lake I fished around here is Saguaro a couple of years ago in April from my kick boat but it was so crowded I didn't expect to catch anything - good thing too because we didn't. With the regular boat coming soon I'm figuring on hitting Roosevelt, Apache, Havasu, Alamo, and maybe Powell if we have a couple of days off. I live right next to Pleasant but it's packed to the gills every time we've been over there. Does it lighten up a little in the fall/winter/spring? I hope it does but for now I'm not considering it a high priority due to the crowds. I miss fishing from a boat and hope to get out a lot this fall. Crappie and Bluegill have been my favorite eating fish since as early as I can remember.

Welcome Gene. Lots of good places to fish around here. Pleasant can be a good lake but to avoid the crowds, you have to be there really early or really late.

Too hot for me to fish this time of year but better weather is coming soon.

If you want to fish pleasant go on weekdays early and get off lake by 10am of so, not bad for "lake lice" but starts to get busier after 10am but not like weekends, that place is scary on weekends.
Title: Re: Hey New Guys
Post by: ejcrist on August 07, 2017, 02:58 PM
Thanks fella's. Yeah I figured during the week would be a lot better. Like you said Fishless, it certainly is scary over there on the weekends. The other week when we drove by to take a look there was a long line of boats waiting to use the pier coming in and another line waiting to go out, and on top all of that a storm was coming down from the north w/lightning. I didn't know there were so many boats in all of Phoenix. I figured there'd be more than one pier at the 10-boat launch ramp; don't know what happened to the second pier. Maybe it was damaged in that last big storm that swept through there.

Hey, let me ask you guys a question. Out of the big lakes in AZ (big = can use boat with > 10 HP engine), what would you consider to be the best Crappie lake(s)? The only place I ever caught Crappie here in this state was in the Payson City Lakes from a kick boat but of course those lakes are tiny. Funny thing was I tied on a Crappie jig I tied while trying to entice the stocked fish and the only thing I caught was smallish size Crappie. I guess they don't call it a Crappie jig for nothing. I'm trying to prep a game plan for when the Tracker boat comes in here in a couple of weeks and right now I'm planning to hit Roosevelt, Havasu, and I think Alamo first - not saying they have the most promise necessarily but they're big with what appears to be a lot of structure and I'm hoping not too crowded. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

IMO, San Carlos and Alamo are a toss up.  San Carlos was nearly drained a couple of years ago but the crappie have definitely come back. (You'll have to get a boat permit and licenses from the Rez which at times is like fishing it self).  Alamo never really took off this year due to a massive rise in the lake level in a short time early spring.

Roosevelt would be next on my list.

Hear good things about Bartlett but not lately.  They always seam to dump water into or drain water out of it when they should be spawning.

Thanks Philbie. I'll check out San Carlos. I was looking at the Reservation's website but only saw a number to call. Maybe I'll take a ride over there this weekend.
Title: Re: Hey New Guys
Post by: Fishless on August 08, 2017, 06:16 PM
you will also need a wildlife permit along with the boat and fishing permit, know their rules, you will be on a lake with no services etc. so you are on your own in a way, often times there may not be a boat on the lake so if you break down (interesting experience) there are stories of the locals being a problem at the lake but a vast majority of people have no issues. Carlos is a little bit cooler temp wise, Alamo is an oven this time of year an Roosevelt is quite hot temp wise this time of year. If you fish during the monsoon keep an eye out for storms at all of the lakes they can jump up and bite you in the butt quick.

Hello all,

I just wanted to take a second and say hello. My name is Dusty and I've been lurking on the site for a few months, but just finally joined. I'm originally from Michigan, but moved to AZ about 10 years ago. I primarily catfish, but have been trying to tackle some crappie. Its a bit different than catching them through the ice like i used to. I look forward to learning as much as possible and sharing my reports.

-Dusty

Hey Dusty good to meet you.  There are a lot of folks from the midwest on here.  You'll find much of the crappie fishing techniques you used back home probably work here as well.

Hello everyone,
My wife and I have retired from the Army down in the Sierra Vista/FT Huachuca area and are trying hard to figure out how to catch Crappie in the AZ clear and deep waters.  My wife is originally from Missouri (that Show me thing got me, Lol) and we used to slay Crappie on Truman Lake.  We have a 21' pontoon boat and mainly camp and fish Roosevelt, but am willing to try other lakes.  We are talking about trying some night fishing this weekend so would appreciate any advise you experts could provide.

I have heard many great things about San Carlos Lk for Crappie.  I called Soda Canyon store yesterday and they said there was no water.  Anyone have any information?

Last but not least, thank you all for the information you provide on this site as it helps keep me motivated....... as at least someone catches a Crappie now and then.    :headbang:

Welcome Tight Lines.
Will be down in the Huachuca City area for granddaughters 7th birthday bash next week.
Have heard Patagonia has a decent crappie population.

There are crappie in several of the southern lakes down near you guys (ck out the game and fish website) Patagonia and other lakes down there. Carlos is a mud hole but you might do well at night at Roosevelt, good place to start is the tires near the marina (just beware those monsoon storms can roll into Roosevelt very fast and make it an ugly lake.

Thank you guys for the welcome and input.  Didn't do any good on Rosey but the weather (wind) was not to cooperative.  Caught a half dozen and a Gil using minnows in  20' water around windy hill.  I am going to try to figure out Patagonia Lake as well.  Caught only two the last time my wife and I fished there.  This AZ Crappie fishing is tough....at least for me.  :(

Grew up in Missouri and bass fished a lot as a kid. Learned form my dad, uncle and their friends who were frequent fishing trip partners. I'm retired military so have moved around a lot and fished in a number of states. Moved to AZ from Alaska back in '99. Bought a used Champion bass boat not long after we moved to Arizona and I did a bit of bass fishing over the years then sold the boat.  Recently my wife and I decided we need to get out and stay a bit more active so decided to get another boat. We bought a new tracker 175 and want to do more crappie fishing which can be a little more relaxing and less work than bass (not to mention great eating!).  Have enjoyed our fist few outings with the new boat and are learning some of the ins and outs of crappie fishing. We've boated a few. Hoping to keep learning and appreciate the info and knowledge shared here on the forum. Very interested in becoming a member and meeting some of you folks. Hoping to get to one of the next open meetings to say hello.

Hey Marc, good to meet you.  I think you're right, catching crappie sure does seem a bit more relaxing than catching bass and good eating too.  Hope to see you at one of our next open meetings.  If you are interested in one of the closed meetings that occur before the next open one, you can attend but only if a club member sponsors you, which I'd be willing to.  Message me if there's one you think you'd like to attend.  I won't make the Nov meeting unfortunately.

Hellooooo,

New guy here.  Moved to AZ 8 months ago from Oregon (46 years living there was about 45 years too many). Have not done a lot of crappie fishing, but I'm interested in doing more of it.  I picked up a 14' boat, motor, trailer and have a couple very light spinning rods I used for a few crappie fishing trips in Oregon.

Been frolicking around the forum a bit trying to pick up some tips from fishing reports. I went to Saguaro a couple weeks ago and plan to try Bartlett next week for my first time.

Looking forward to reading more from other members.

Thanks!

Hey PDX2AZ, good to meet you.  I'm Matt (screenname OneBlade).  You'll find many of the crappie fishing techniques you used in Oregon still apply here.  Good luck at Bartlett, there are some nice crappie there, try Yellow Cliffs, Cat Bay, Alder cove, etc. anywhere you can find some trees/structure deep.  If interested, you could also check out Art's presentation at Bass Pro Shop: http://www.azcrappie.com/forum/index.php/topic,3859.0.html
