check oil level, check oil pickup screen/filter for blockage, check VRO pump. Mine uste to do the something, it was the F'n VRO pump ($325 for the pump i put it in)
-

That's how we did it growing up in my parent's boat as well. But with my new boat, I can't do that. And if it can, I couldn't find out how. When my oil level got too low in my tank the boat just shut down. Didn't matter if I put oil in the fuel or not. The motor didn't detect oil from the reserve so it said "No way, I'm not working" Just a thought before you try putting the oil in there.

thx guys i just got back from superstition marine . told john and firdt thing he said was, are you using cheap. i said no the pennzoil semi synth from bps. he gave me hell, again, for not spening the big bucks on evenrude oil. anyway he said the oil got so thick from the cold it wouldnt pull through the very small hole it goes through to the engine. case solved.no money spent. its all good.
-
sounds like cold temp.problem.
do you use syn.blend it may help,
i use it in my 200 yamaha works great year round.

Yeah, I got a load of crap a few years ago for the oil I was using when I took my boat to Performance Marine. The oil had reeked havoc on my internals and I had to spend up around 1,500 to fix it all. Now I use nothing but the Evinrude Synthetic.
-
no kidding holy smoke 35 per gal sounds cheap all of a sudden.
-
Yup, that was exactly my thought!
-
Can you get the Evinrude Synthetic oil cheaper in bulk anywhere?
$35 a gallon.......Yikes! :banghead:
TKO
-
the evenrude cite has it for 32. just ordered some.
-
I retract what I said. I use Mercury, not Evinrude. I can get "bulk" from Performance Marine. By "bulk" I mean I purchase a gallon from their bulk tank. It's a little cheaper than just buying a new gallon each time. I don't use my boat enough to need that purchase that much oil though. :-/

How much do they charge for the Merc synthetic bulk? I think I bought it for 28 at Tempe when they were still around maybe 3 years ago.
-
Steve, I think I pay $26 per gallon, I have the mercury two gallon jug that I take in. You might call out there and talk to Sue but they fill the jug out of a 55 gallon barrel.
-
Thanks bruce. I'll check it out.

I love my 4 stroke! :3some:
-
my next boat will have a 4 stroke, will go mercury, price for PM on a 4 stroke is about the same as the oil you will use in an opti, and the new 4 stroke only weigh about 25lbs heavier than the 2 stroke opti and mercury makes their own now with good results.
Brent at performance will tell you to go with the (company made oil) they know what is needed he also says most two strokes don't get cold enough here in AZ to thicken up the oil where it will not pull the oil up for use
