Title: Bartlett Lake Christmas Tree Habitat Volunteer Opportunity
Post by: AGFDHabitat on December 05, 2019, 11:18 AM
Start 2020 off right and help us drop Christmas trees into Bartlett Lake!

We’re looking for volunteers on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4, and Saturday Jan. 11 to install these used Christmas trees that will help ensure robust fish populations at this Tonto National Forest impoundment. We’ll be starting at 8:30 a.m. each day from the yellow cliffs boat ramp.

Just bring a pair of gloves and help conserve sport-fishing opportunities for future generations!

Contact Bryant Dickens at 623-236-7593 if you have any questions.

Hey Bryant, do you want us to bring any trees? If someone wants to donate a tree for the cause, how do they do that? I followed the post on Facebook a little bit, but wasn't fully clear on tree donation.

Yes, feel free to bring trees if you plan on coming out to volunteer. We will be out collecting trees from city drop off locations the days before the install dates so we wont be available to collect trees at our HQ location those days.

Don't forget to think about volunteering for the tree drop at Bartlett.

I'm planning on coming out on Friday and have a few people who want to help. I'll also be bringing 3 trees (so far) with me.

Will you need extra boats? Are you planning on dropping any of the trees on Friday or just prep them Friday and then drop them another day? Do you need anyone in the club to supply anything or is everything covered?

Great! Look forward to meeting you on Friday. We are planning on installing on Friday. We have rope and cinder blocks out there. The only thing you guys would need to bring is your own water and snacks and some work gloves. We will have our large pontoon boat out there and two other smaller game and fish boats. I will provide a piece of paper that says volunteer for AZGFD so no need to buy a tonto pass. We are on track to have over 1000 trees out there by next Friday.

That's awesome! We gonna be able to get all 1000 installed in 3 days? Do you guys have drop locations already planned out?

Looks forward to getting out there and help!

I was there on Monday the 23rd and the YC ramp was open. I didn't get a bite, but am real new to crappie, so I wasn't too surprised... How long will the day last for the xmas tree project on the 11th?

Thanks for the update on the YC ramp being open, some times the TNF is slow to re-open things after they close it even when conditions change. I would ck back in a day or so I am sure g and f will answer you question.

Yes, I think we will be able to install the 1000+ trees in the 3 days. Our large pontoon boat can hold 40+ per trip alone. We have 10 sites selected all near the yellow cliffs ramp and up river.

Bryant, I plan on joining you on the 11th, but in the meantime am curious if the tree drops from last weekend are logged by location? I'd be curious to try and find them to see what they look like on sonar? I am still struggling to figure out how to read my various sonar settings... I grew up a fly fisherman and the transition to lake fishing with electronics has not been smooth!
Thanks in advance and plan on seeing you at 830 Saturday morning!

They are logging and marking and as soon as the project is complete they will publish the GPS information. I think they may add or take away some locations after they get an idea on how many trees they will be able to obtain :dontknow:

To add what Fishless said, many of the drop locations were predetermined, so they're already marked on their documents, but they will update the habitat document on their website once they're done. gnF received a lot more trees than expected so it is possible for them to drop them in other places they didn't plan on going to.

I have some pictures I took last Friday that show some cool images on their sonar. I'll be making a separate post for that when I get a chance. It was a lot of fun. When you're out there this Saturday, jump on the big boat for a drop or two and check out the sonar.

Bryant, I'll be there 8:30am sharp Saturday.  Excited to see how you guys set this all up to sink those trees. What a great way to use up old trees.

Good to see a couple of your there, this was a great event to volunteer at.  Donuts and water provided, weather was nice, and we knocked out the remaining trees I think (except perhaps some larger ones they were gonna do the following week). Thanks AZGFD for all of the trees added over the last 2 weekends.  Was cool to see them dropped in several areas around the lake can't wait to catch one over them next time I'm fishing there.

Most of the trees were dropped Matt they brought down those 20' trees,, Hunter estimated some at 300lbs!!! they thought they might have to tie a old car to them to get them to sink ;D As soon as the project is finished they will add the GPS info to the map.

Bryant, this might sound like a crazy question, but do you have the coordinates of the tree drop in WGS84 gps datum format? I tried using a conversion program and the formats do not line up... thanks.

Bryant, also can you update the link on the https://fishaz.azgfd.com/ website (under Fish & Boat AZ Map menu) to have the updated sites/coordinates?  We keep a link to that latest doc at that site in http://www.azcrappie.com/forum/index.php/topic,4115.0.html

Sorry about that, didn't see the post. Our information officer left the agency so we were looking for someone that had access to the Fish AZ website to update the map. We finally found someone.

WGS 84 and NAD 83 are only 3-4 feet different. Finding the habitat with either should be very easy.

I know someone that had access... Maybe Amberle. She said she was soooo excited to take it over after Nick left. haha

Don't know if she knows how to fish, but she told me that she's the one who actually built the website so it could be used.
