Hi Guys,
New to the forum, and must say I like the atmosphere here a lot better than some of the other more caustic forums out there.
So here's the question. I was at San Carlos on Saturday (Caught 9 all on 1/8 ounce jigs BBC tipped with a minnow) and I noticed alot of boats using long 10-12 foot rods. So what is the setup? It appears to be a weight (1/4 ounce dropshot?) and 10 feet of line with a hook using minnows?
What kind of rod?
what kind of weight?
what kind of hook? Circle?
and what depth?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

mearnsman,
I was on S/C saturday as well we ended up with 46. Look at my post under san carlos for a detailed report. The 10' rods we were using were just the bass pro brand for about $40. The one thing this club has taught me is depth is key, second is speed, third is color. Don't be afraid to twich the pole as when we did this many a time the rod would load up. We were using bullet weights with about a 2' foot floro leader then roadrunners spaced about 18" apart with 12' of line out trolling .5

We usually catch more fish when the poles are further away from the boat and slow trolling shallow water. I prefer the 12' poles many of the other guys like the 10 footers.

We like the 10, 11, and 12 footers in front and 6 or 7 footers in back.

We were out last sat and between my dad, bro and i we managed to catch 61 crappie by 5:00 pm. In the front and side we used 13ft panfish poles from wally world and the rear 10ft poles and all with a drop shot rig with a 1/4 weight just tipped with minnows with about 13-16ft of line out drifting.

Thanks for the input guys. I had some gift cards from cabelas so I ordered 2 10 foot rods. We'll see how they work next week.

I'll be doing a crappie seminar at the Mesa Sportsmans Warehouse at 6 p.m. tonight if your interested. I have posted it a couple of times but for some reason none of my posts have taken. .....Art
