Title: Getting Started
Post by: BBQRN51 on December 23, 2011, 07:49 PM
:sign0144:  Hey all, nice forum!  I'm just getting started with the outdoor stuff here in AZ, just moved down from Idaho, where we knew when to go, where to go etc about catching fish.  Not so much here.  Always thought the FISH AZ bumper stickers were a joke!

Anyway, I've got a wife and 4 kids that all want to go, and I figure you guys could help with a nice enough place to take everybody fishing, without breaking the bank.  Is there a spot that has good bank fishing, or a boat rental that doesn't break the bank?

Any information would be great,

Steve

the most reasonable spot to rent a toon is apache lake marina. apache has great bank fishing but not for crappie. both types of bass walleye and yellow bass both channel and flathead cats.  the place is tough to get to but just georgeoase. even a cheap hotel. the toon is striped so bring a chair but the lake is beauty. winter rate at the hotel two nights for price of one, 99 bucks. roosevelt is easiest and has crappie, ahem, and is reasonable.

The only place to really bank fish for Crappie is San Carlos, or maybe Bartlett (Rattlesnake Cove) in the spring. Go to Bass Pro and buy some 2" Kalin Grubs in John Deere Green and Black/ Blue/ Chart. Also get some 1/16 oz lead heads and some slip bobber set ups for minnows.

Steve,
My wife and I get out frequently, Crappie Hunting---we are frequent "Bartlett Lakers" where bank fishing is great for a variety of fish, the area is perfect for family camping ( most areas do NOT have facilities---gotta rough it-)
If interested, give me a call after the holidays and perhaps we can chat about the bountiful opportunities to "Fish Arizona"
Debra and I have Elk Hunted, Deer Hunted  Quail Hunted , Dove Hunted, Antelope, Bear and Mountain Lion Hunted all over Az and recently joined the Great organization "AZCA" and are looking forward to the activities and meeting all the interesting people associated---Glad to help if we can--

Shortest drive and I think you can rent boats is Canyon but good chance you may get skunked unless you are a really good bass fisherman and you still might get skunked.   You can also rent smaller fishing boats at Apache and that would be my recommendation even though the drive is a bit crazy.

If your from Idaho, all our lakes around the valley will be frozen over till late in the spring with warming temps (sorry)  :lol_hitting: :lol_hitting:

acutally a fun lake for family on a day trip is Tempe Town lake, it has some crappie has bass, catfish and now stocked with trout during the winter they rent boats (electric) at the marina, it is an urban lake but your state fishing license is all you need. Excellent shore fishing and if the kids get bored they can run around in the park. Bartlett has good shore fishing (don't think they rent boats?) Pleasant rents boats at scorpion bay marina but man they are pricey :o. Lot of the lakes on the salt side, apache, roosevelt, canyon rent boats but can be tough to fish until you learn them.

about tempe town lake, where is the best spot to set up?  Took the kids to Veteran's Oasis last two days to test their mettle.  Did well, even though we didn't catch but one pan sized little trout.  Saw plenty of sun fish/blue gill, but only caught one.   Trying TTL tomorrow.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

just about anywhere on the north shoreline you can fish, and there are spots on the south side but that parking lot gets full of ASU student parking, the bass guys are catching small bass on cast masters and lots of them go down to the west near the bridge pylons and cast plastic worms etc. for the bass, the trout in the lake are the same smaller trout but there are some nice incentive fish put in the lake, most people throw small spinners or use the power bait off the bottom for trout. Good luck.

At TTL I've heard of guys catching Crappie at night in the spring/ summer around the bridge pylons using minnows under slip bobbers. Moon phase shouldn't matter as there are lights around the lake on the sidewalks. Also, in the late spring/ summer try the fishing dock at Rattle Snake Cove (Bartlett). Use a deep cycle battery to power a couple of 21" submersible tube lights. You can also use a motorcycle battery (cheap and lightweight) but it wouldn't last as long. Swim grubs and/ or fish minnows under bobbers.
