General Discussion / AZGFD - Roosevelt Lake Rising
« Last post by OneBlade on January 10, 2019, 06:50 PM »
From: https://fishaz.azgfd.com/fishingwaters/centralwaters/fishing-report-roosevelt-lake-rising-mogollon-rim-frozen/

Due to the recent storms and run-off, the amount water flowing into Roosevelt Lake has increased dramatically. Both the Salt River and the Tonto Creek are flowing above their normal rates for this time of year. The lake is currently 40% full and rising slightly each day. The water is very clear with the temperature reaching 50 degrees on some morning and rising to 54 degrees on a sunny afternoon.

At the current water temperature, fish metabolism will slow meaning that cold-blooded fish are less active and will eat less. Combine the colder water temperature with the recent storms and large swings in the barometric pressure,  all of these factors are contributing to fishing being called poor. Anglers reports some success using a deep Carolina-rig technique. A few other anglers reporting using jigging spoons such as a Trendsetter jig in deeper depths.

Crappie fishing has been reported as extremely slow; however, if the weather stabilizes for a couple of consecutive days, crappie fishing should improve greatly.  Large schools of crappie are being located in 15-25 foot depths. The bite during colder months can be very slight if vertically fishing. An ultra light rod and a light braided line are always recommended for crappie fishing.

Some of the lakes have TNF daily pass machines again (CC) only no cash I understand, have seen them at Bartlett and Rosy, problem is when we cked Cholla ramp and found it closed the machine was covered with a black trash bag with a note on it about government shutdown. The Bartlett marina sells the day passes I don't know what time they open. I have friends that order their yearly passes on line from the forest service but thinking there is no one at the other end to complete the transaction and mail you your new yearly tag? If there website is not down the TNF used to have a list online of vendors for their daily passes.

I canít imagine the day old passes ever expire. They have year that you can scratch off and even if they donít have 2019 on there I would assume they would still take them. Just be sure and scratch off the correct date and attach a watercraft sticker. Oh and make sure itís hanging from your mirror and visible. But I would doubt anybodyís even looking with the government shut down.

You go to the Tonto NF office and buy a new one.
Perhaps I was not clear ,I usually buy my annual permit at the Barlett lake office but that only works if they are open, my question was now that we have a shut down does anyone know where can you buy an annual permit ?,  just saw your response Art Thanks

Dang, I didn't realize they were closed Craig.  Sorry about that bit of advice.   Fortunately mine expires end of March this year.

Iím not going to make the meeting either....

Craig - Iíd suggest just buying a Tonto daily pass for the time being until the offices open again and you can get your new annual pass. Lots of local stores sells the Tonto day pass. If the rules are still unchanged, Youíll need to get a watercraft sticker along with that.
